Killer Santa Kumar Tamang Is Still Traceless

Massive Manhunt Launched To Arrest Him. People Flee Homes

Siliguri, March 19:   " We must arrest him. Otherwise he would kill more people."

This is the statement of a senior police officer posted at Katarey near Panighatta under Mirik Police Station.

     

The said officer is among hundreds of police and RAF personnel unsuccessfully looking for Santa Kumar Tamang a resident of Katarey forest village.

   

Tamang a forest guard and the father of three has been on a killing spree since Monday after he killed Augusu Toppo a private school teacher who used to double as an insurance agent.

    

On his way on a bicycle Tamang attacked Toppo on Monday and he died on the spot. Tamang chopped off Toppo’s left hand.

     

 Then Tamang moved ahead and attacked a 60-year-old man known as Mukhia at Chenga riverbed. Though Mukhia tried to defend him and attacked Tamang with the weapon in his hand, Mukhia suffered serious injuries and the doctors at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital have referred him to Kolkata. It is believed that Tamang has also suffered injuries.

     

Massive police force and RAF have been deployed in the locality that falls under Kurseong sub division while Tamang is still believed to be hiding in the nearby forest.

     

Some local people said that today Tamang was seen inside Nepal which is just opposite to Lohagarh tea garden. People in Nepal chased him away and local sources said he has come back to the area and is hiding in the forest.

    

A senior police officer said “ Tamang has posed as danger for local people many of whom have left their homes for safer places.” Believed to have lost his mental balance, Tamang is carrying sharp weapon and might attack anyone coming on his way.

   

But, why Tamang known as a gentleman and liked by everyone in the village did so.

  

Though the reason would be known only after his arrest, some local people said that he was upset after his daughter eloped with the son of his best friend.

   

A senior forest officer said, “ Tamang was a good man and was sincere in his duty.”
