Siliguri, Feb. 27: The Confederation of Indian Industry has said it will carry out skill development programmes for youths in north Bengal so that they can be absorbed into retail and tourism sectors which have witnessed growth in the region in recent years
The announcement was made at the annual meet of the north Bengal zonal council of the CII held at Savin Kingdom here yesterday evening.
“In the work plan of the CII for 2013-14 which was presented at yesterday’s meeting, it was decided that a skill development programme would be carried out for youths in north Bengal. The trend of economic growth in north Bengal shows that maximum employment opportunities are in the tourism and retail sectors,” Prabir Seal, who was nominated as the vice-chairman of the NB zonal council of the CII for the next fiscal, said today.
“The training will be in consonance with the trend and help youths hone their skills so that they can be easily absorbed into these sectors.”
The meeting also hosted a discussion on “Bottlenecks of the development of North Bengal and the way forward” and panellists included Siliguri MLA Rudranath Bhattacharya and city police commissioner Anand Kumar.

Rape & murder by neighbour

Alipurduar, Feb. 27: The body of a Class VI girl who was allegedly raped by a neighbour last night was found in a garden today.
A resident of the area, Kishore Naskar, said the girl’s father while returning home from the market last evening met his neighbour Albert Toppo. He told Albert to take a cauliflower he had bought from the market and drop it at his house.
When Albert reached the house, he met the worker’s 13-year-old daughter and offered her a ride on his cycle.
The child knew Albert and agreed.
“I returned home at 8.30pm and heard that my daughter was missing. We started looking for her. Even Albert expressed concern,” the father said today.
This morning, workers at Mathura Tea Estate spotted the girl’s body tied to tea bushes.
The girl’s brother and two other boys told the police they had seen her with Albert.
Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said: “Albert Toppo has been arrested. Preliminary investigation reveals that it is a case of rape and murder.”
A police officer said Albert was being questioned.
