Dynamics in political friendship puts Darjeeling under deep uncertainty

Friday, 8 February 20130 comments

The panchayat elections are yet due. And the political friendship that assumed to be at the highest peak between the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee seems to be on the boil just within a span of mere six months.
It is no astonishment to see ‘friendship’ falling apart in politics. But even before the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) started to spread its wings in the hills, an agreement that was signed and coined by both these friends, the party which by luck or unluck still enjoys support in the hills have started resurrecting the demand for a separate state. The ‘friendship’ may be falling apart which is not a matter of concern atleast for now, but on the contrary it has exposed the line on which both the parties had agreed to set up the new council.
In what the opposition parties in the hills have been claiming that the GTA would not fulfill the aspiration of the hill people have come true. The claim has been proved by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) itself by demanding Gorkhaland threatening ‘militant stir’ which so far has been mere a words to speak.
More than the ‘Militant stir’ threat, the political uncertainty lies in the fact after a decision to form the Lepcha Development Council (LDC) popped up with the state cabinet giving a go ahead. And hence the friendship between Didi (Mamata Bannerjee) and Daju (Bimal Gurung) ends here.
In the recce, time has now come for all political as well as apolitical organizations in the hills to put aside the confusion. The confusion as to what do the people of the hills need. The GJM’s call for a fresh agitation if Telengana is formed without resigning from the GTA is sure‘confusion’. ‘If’ Telangana is formed, ‘then’ Gorkhaland should also be formed. What ‘if’ Telangana is not formed? The question remains unanswered.
The GTA set up seems failing with the state government infringing into its powers. Atleast it can be said so at the moment because the state cabinet did not find it important to consult the GTA before giving a nod to form the Lepcha Development Council. The LDC is yet another brainchild of the Bengal Chief Minister to woe the Lepcha tribals of the hills like she did with the Morcha by forming the GTA. The result of the formation of the GTA is clearly visible. It has not powers to rule its own area.
