Demands Gorkhaland coupled with speedy transfer of funds and Departments
Darjeeling Jan 31: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) here is hitting out with threats for a militant stir
in its home turf and its some of the top leaders in the country’s capital is meeting top bureaucrats and
politicians pressurizing them with the demand of Gorkhaland.
Morcha leadership lead by its general secretary Roshan Giri met union home secretary and said that
Gorkhaland should be formed if Telangana is formed. “The home secretary suggested us not to resort to
agitation at the moment. He assured us that he will take up the matter with the union home minister,” said
Giri over phone this evening.
The delegation that met the secretary also met Darjeeling MP Jaswant Singh. “The MP said that the
separate state can be achieved only when the GTA is accorded a status of a union territory,” Giri added.
According to Kalimpong MLA and Morcha spokesperson Harka Bahadur Chettri, the delegation’s main
issue was the formation of Gorkhaland on the lines similar to Telangana but the delegation simultaneously
also raised the issue of delay in transfer of funds and departments to the GTA. Asked if it was viable to
raise the issue at a time when the party was harping of fresh movement for Gorkhaland, Chettri shot back
saying, “It should not be taken otherwise as because what we raised is according to the GTA agreement”.
The anti Morcha parties in the hills however have alleged that the recent development in the political
spectrum of the hills is a ‘conspiracy’ hatched by both the GJM and Mamata Bannerjee to fool the hill
people.
“This is nothing but a pressure tactic from the Morcha to the government for speedy transfer of funds and
department to the GTA. Hence the issue of Gorkhaland has surfaced. Otherwise the separate state deal has
already been sealed,” said an anti-Morcha leader.
