Malda Feb 28: The Trinamool congress outcasted the Congress with an emphatic win in the Malda by poll on Thursday registering a margin of 20,452 votes. The TMC candidate Krishnendu Chowdhury who is also the state tourism minister won the English Bazar seat to conquer the congress bastion.

Ever since the counting started this morning, Choudhury lead with ample votes while the congress lacked behind in every round. CPI-M got back to the fight when the votes of the urban areas were being counted. They pushed the Congress back to the third position but could not surpass Choudhury in any round. Even in the municipal wards popularly known as the CPI-M bastion in English Bazaar, Trinamul Congress bagged huge number of votes. The BJP managed to bag only 10 percent of the total vote casted.

The CPI-M got 50,339 votes including 56 postal ballots and Tiwary got 45,271 including 5 postal ballots. BJP’s Sanjit Mishra got only 9,442 votes with no postal ballot.

Choudhury had won the seat as a Congress candidate under TMC-Congress alliance by defeating CPIM by 21,829 votes in 2011 Assembly elections. The fight this time was triangular as the Congress and the TMC fought elections separately.

The seat had remained vacant after Choudhury switched over from the Congress to the Trinamool Congress few months back.
