ARE WE
LIVING IN A DEMOCRACY OR A MONARCHY ?

The statement given by Hon’ble Speaker of Sikkim, Mr.
K.T.Gyalsten at Tambu Tar near Saramsa
Garden on the occasion of SDF’s Foundation Day itself
speaks about the political culture followed by our ruling party. Addressing the
function “he asserted that there is no
alternative in Sikkim
to the ruling SDF party and Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.” Listed
among one of the highly educated member of Sikkim Legislative Assembly and
hailing from the law background, he is very much expected to know about the
various facets of Indian Democracy. The statement itself gives us the answer
whether our Government is a democratic one or a monarchic. It is the law of
nature that nothing in this world is
permanent, except change. Change is the need of the hour and sooner or
later it will definitely take place. How can a person of such a high intellect
and calibre give such assurance to the innocent public?
It is a cobweb which is going to be brushed out in the
upcoming Assembly Election. It shows the kind of leadership they are working
under. Because “The function of
leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” It is creating
a strong dissonance in my mind as in why there is no alternative to Pawan Chawling? Isn’t there any capable
person in the SDF party itself who dares to hold the steering and take our
state to some better direction? Is SDF party lacking behind in creating good
leadership?
In the same statement our Speaker also added that there is
no alternative to SDF. I am saying these words with great conviction that for a
smooth functioning of a democratic set up, we need to have an accountable and
transparent government. Remaining in power for four consecutive times, SDF has
walked very far from the democratic ideas, principles and has lost its motto
behind the formation of its party ,i.e. 21 years ago. It is high time now that
the government should prepare itself for a challenging and free and fair
electoral politics.
The fresh example of change can be seen in the case of a
dictator called Hosni Mubarak who
ruled Egypt
for almost 30 years until he was swept from power in a wave of mass protests.
There is a revolutionary wave spreading all over the world, where the
democratic principles have not been followed, due to a single ruler ruling the
state for a long period of time. We can take several examples related to it.
Not going so far, we have witnessed the fact that how CPI(M) Party staying in power for 35
years lost the election by a huge margin
to Trinamool Congress , further
creating the history of making a first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal. Sikkim is also
going through such revolutionary phase and will definitely turn up with some
positive results. Our state will not only change in political aspect but also in relation to
socio-economic, infrastructural advancement, education standardisation, better
health facilities, smooth connectivity of roads throughout the length and
breadth of the state and also with the introduction of modern technology and
developments within the state. This is the
Sikkim
of our dream and we will give our every possible effort to make it
possible. We are the freedom fighters of 21st Century, walking on
the path of Gandhi, we are marching ahead with dedication and commitment to
make Sikkim
a better place to live in.
