The sun goes down every evening and it’s up every morning. Cheers on the glittery face rises after 10 complete years amongst those who are set to get a new lease of life with a new job of a primary school teacher thanks to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) that has finally started to release the appointment letters.

The news of course must have brought cheers to some 500 odd people who had been running pillar to post in a bid to seek job for livelihood. I must say here now that this is what Darjeeling hills has been facing at the wake of Gorkhaland agitation hit first during the late eighties and later from 2007 to 2011.

Some ten years back these people were a young bunch of chaps when the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) then ruled by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) appeared for the exams for the post of primary teacher. The enthusiasm to get a new job derailed with passing years when the DGHC via GNLF put on hold the appointment for reason unexplained.
Although, the original panel was cancelled the reason for which is also unknown to many of them whose name appeared in the panel list, the initiative by the GTA seems promising now. Let me keep the political motive aside as of now because if I go on to talk about it would be a long discussion.

The ferry tale of the new GTA via the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has begun. It has started its revelation though its grudge with the state government remains to be sorted out. Whether the GTA will remain or not in the future is a million dollar question blustered by every mouth in the hills, one thing has so far gone right and that is the decision to appoint the primary teachers.

The hills suffering from unemployment has seen over the year’s youths migrating to the bigger cities or for that matter to abroad in search of jobs. Many have forcefully settled despite the job matching his qualification. Many have taken up a profession of a contractor to meet up his/her livelihood.

Gorkhaland is ofcourse a dream come true vision of every Gorkha living in India but parallely the socio-economic condition is of utmost importance too.  A subtle effort to achieve statehood has fetched nothing. Infact it has hit the hill economy. Ten years wait is a long period for starting with a job. No wonder it has come and has come at the right time for some of the appointees.

Having said that Gorkhaland is a must win game but it has to be achieved with a strong action.
