Hill School celebrates 125 years of education

Darjeeling 19th March: The St Joseph School North Point Darjeeling today celebrated the completion of 125 years of education in the Hills.

At the occasion, Archbishop of Calcutta Rev. Thomas D’Souza was present who too blessed the inauguration of school’s auditorium and the celebration was followed with the rituals of Eucharist celebration or the thanksgiving.

With Kanchenjunga at the back drop the school is located at Singhamari few kilometers from the town and its building structure has Grecian columns and cuneiform windows enclosing an eye-catching quadrangle in the centre and has sufficient infrastructure needed to provide the best qualification to the student.Founded by Fr. Henry Depelchin the pioneer of the Zambezi mission, late back in February 13th 1888 along with his companion had heralded the birth of the new school.

According to the historians at those times until the foundation of St Joseph School in 1888 other prominent school were Loreto Convent established in 1847 and St. Paul's School in 1864.

“It feels good to be back in the Hills,” the Archbishop started his speech adding, “As I was entering Darjeeling today I wondered how Fr. Depelchin must have felt while blessing the opening of the school that completes 125 years.”

The rector or the principal of the school Rev. Fr. Santy Matthew S.J said, “The school will always impart the best of education in the Hills.”

Apart from education the school has a classified team of sportsmen in Cricket, Football and Volleyball and has been featured in films by Raj Kapoor, Satyajit Ray, Anjan Dutt to name a few.

According to the EW Survey of Schools, conducted by Education World Magazine, the school is one of the best boarding/residential schools in the country.
