Woman arrested for child trafficking

Kurseong March 10: Police have picked up one Sumitra Ramudamu (35) a resident of Jorebungalow suspecting child trafficking under section 363 and 366 A of the IPC late last night from Teesta Bazar. Ramadumu was produced before the chief Judicial Magistrate in Darjeeling today and sent to judicial custody.


The woman reportedly lured three children from her locality by giving them honey and later boarded them in a Gangtok bound vehicle. All the way upto Teesta Bazar the children were seen crying and the woman tired to keep them silent giving them honey. The driver of the vehicle feeling suspicious later around 6:30 pm dropped the lady with the three children at Teesta Bazar Police outpost. While investigation at the outpost it was found that the lady along with the children was residents of Jorebungalow.  The police from Jorebungalow police station later rescued the children and arrested the woman.

“The woman has been arrested and produced in the court. The police are further investigating whether the woman belongs to a child trafficking racket,” said Sujit Lama, the Officer Incharge of Jorebungalow Police Station.

Sources however said that the arrested woman is mentally ill. Out of the three children two were girls.
