GJM knocks President’s door for central university

Gangtok April : Bimal Gurung, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief who is also the GTA chief today met Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India demanding establishment of a central university in the Darjeeling hills. The President is on a 3 day tour to the North Eastern states.

Before submitting a memorandum to the President Gurung however said, “There are certain issue still pending even after the agreement was signed between the GJM, Union government and the state. The demand for a central university is a long standing demand of the people of hills and that is why we want to apprise the President about the issue”.

Gurung was accompanied by Roshan Giri, the GJM general secretary and Kalimpong MLA Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri. The Morcha team also apprised the President to arrange a tripartite meeting with the state and the centre so that the GTA functions smoothly. The Morcha also demanded transfer of reserve forest with the President like in other autonomous region.

Giri told journalists after meeting Mukherjee that he has assured all help to initiate the process of setting up of the university. “He said that he will extend all possible support for the setting up of the university and also promised to apprise the union and the state government for tripartite meeting. He has also taken consideration of the reserve forest transfer,” Giri said.
