Off season vegetables in Sikkim

Gangtok April 12: Believe it or not!!!!!! But from now on you would also be able to eat the off season vegetables in the Himalayan State. Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) has taken up the project to cultivate off season vegetables in various places in south Sikkim. Cultivation of off season vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower and tomatos along with seasonal villages are at a full swing in villages like Perbing, Phongla, Upper Sadam, Chemchey that covers almost 40 beneficiaries.

The hybrid seeds is provided by ATMA and the cultivation shall be done with organic manure like urbara Shakti produced from the garbage. The farmers are also given training on technology dissemination.

A Field Day cum Crop Cutting of Barley was conducted by ATMA, South on April 10 in presence of  all BTMs of South District and Kamal Thatal who encouraged the farmers for cultivation of cereals grains and vegetables. During crop cutting, 9m2 of barley field was taken for the programme from which 6.610Kg of seeds were weighed by using weighing balance. From this finding it was estimated that 3672.175Kg of seeds can be produced from 10,000m2 of land excluding 50% moisture content i.e at the ratio of 1:20 Kg. At the end of the programme Dy. PD South ensured the farmers to keep all seed for cultivation in next season in various places for the production of seeds in large scale for further uses.
