NBS Times Report
Jalpaiguri March
2: People
of otherwise tranquil Jateswar, a small hamlet by the NH 31 in Jalpaiguri
district under Falakata police station, went berserk on Saturday evening setting
a police vehicle on fire after the cops had gone there on an awareness drive.
The incident happened at around 7
pm in the evening when few policemen from Falakata PS went to Jateswar in a
vehicle to make people aware about chit funds. In Jateswar and Falakata region
several chit fund companies are operational from the past two months which
guarantee a double return of the money invested within 15 to 21 days of
investment. Police had actually gone there to ask people not to invest in such
companies.
The miking irked few persons
involved with the chit fund companies. They therefore provoked the mob and
instigated them to open an attack on the police personnel. In the process the
vehicle was ransacked and was set on fire. Other people who participated in the
attack all have their money invested in the chit fund companies and hence do
not want these companies to leave now.
Jalpaiguri SP, Amit P Javalgi
said that he had asked the Falakata Inspector-in-Charge, Farid Hussain to
conduct raid and arrest the chit fund operatives in the zone. “We have been
receiving complaints and hence I had asked the Falakata IC to conduct raid and
arrest the chit fund operatives. But the IC told me that he could not arrest
anybody even after raiding the place. He had also asked me for permission for
miking in the area, which I had refused to give. But he did not listen to me
and went there for a miking on Saturday following which the incident happened.
We will take disciplinary steps against the IC.
The SP sounded very much
irritated with Hussain and while talking over phone he repeated the point of
taking steps against the IC quite a few times.
Soon after the incident huge
force was deployed in the area to contain further violence. Javalgi claimed
that situation now was under control. However, the cops are worried that after
the incident if the chit fund companies flee from the area that might trigger
another public unrest.
