Siliguri, March 31: Political career
of Nantu Paul the former chairman of Siliguri Municipal Corporation is likely
to be decided by Calcutta High Court when it hears the Congress petitions on
Monday.
The single bench
of Calcutta High Court has directed Nantu Paul the former SMC chairman to let
it know which party he belongs to.
Paul the Congress
councillor in the SMC had become the chairman of the SMC in June 2011. However
he joined the TMC and continued to remain the chairman while the Congress and
the Left Front demanded his removal from the post of the SMC chairman. The Left
Front and the Congress went to Calcutta High Court against Paul and the High
Court directed the TMC prove its majority in the board.
Paul was defeated
in the no confidence vote in February 14. But was reelected as the chairman on March
13.
The Left having
has been abstaining from the board meeting ever since Paul was defeated in the
no confidence vote. Its contention is that Paul was reelected in the post of
chairman illegally.
The withdrawal of
the TMC support has deepened the crisis in the civic body as the 2013-2014
budget tabled on March 23 was defeated and the civic board has been turned in a
minority board.
Hearing the
Congress petition on last week, a single bench of Calcutta High court headed by
Jayanta Biswas had asked Paul’s lawyer to let the court know by Monday which
party Paul belongs to.
The verdict of
the court is likely to have a serious political ramification in Siliguri.
The Congress
hopes that the court would declare Paul’s reelection as the SMC chairman as
illegal. The Congress councillors also want Paul’s councillorship to be taken
away under the anti defection law.
