April 1: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
has started to follow up with legal actions for the collection of pending
landlines bills of over Rs 14 crores in the Hills.
After the singing of the GTA agreement between the State, Centre and the GJM, many of the taxes falling under the State’s jurisdiction were relaxed but the BSNL which is associated with the Centre has not exempted the same.
Following the same all the landline connection in the Hills were cut off. He also said that it is not only the bill which remained unpaid during the agitation but the bills before and after the agitation too.
BSNL authority who had announced giving 30% discount in the month of March over the total bill but could not attracted many.
One of the customers who received the notice and paid the amount said “We followed GJM’s order and now they are doing nothing about it. The public are now upset over the fact that the GJM can do nothing about it. We did not commit any mistakes. All we did was followed the orders of the Morcha. And now when the BSNL are asking for the payments, the Morcha whom we supported so much are staying away now”.

Siliguri Branch Internal financial advisor S.C.Bonik said that more than Rs 14 crores
bills are unpaid. The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), had asked the consumers
not to pay the bills as part of their non-coperation movement in 2008 during
the Gorkhaland agitation. That caused a heavy accumulation of pending bills in
the hills said a sources form bsnl. The Department through its legal lawyer
Ratan Kumar Bagchi has started sending notices to the consumer in Kalimpong
stating to pay the amount failing which within 15 days of receipt of notice the
bsnl will take appropriate legal action to attach the property for the recovery
of the said amount with a interest of 18% acquired thereon from the due date of
bill till realization.
